After several years of self exploration Mary Calkins furthered her education at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, leading to a BFA degree with honors for excellence in painting in1994 and has successfully pursued a creative professional career working as an independent artist since 1996. She currently works in a studio in the rural and peaceful environment of a central Massachusetts woodland which has been her family's home for over a century.
Over the years she has explored the mediums of painting, printmaking and photography, which can be seen merging together and evolving in exciting ways as her work expands. She has developed several unique techniques, and is always searching for new ways to combine multiple mediums and imagery.
Her painting clearly shows an affinity for modern abstraction - with compositions which vibrate with the intensity of color’s energy and emotion and the “inventive use of pattern, which overlaps and coalesces into a whole greater than its part.” (Kristen Zeiser - Clark Gallery, Lincoln, MA)
“Calkins forces the viewer to deliberate at her carefully sequenced compositions and to become involved in their geometry, until deliberation becomes meditation evoking mantras that utter a special spirituality.” (Jean English Gibran/Julian Henry Cherubini - curators St. Botolph Club, Boston, MA).
